Valeria Grieco graduated in Veterinary Medicine (1990) at the Veterinary Faculty of the University of Milan (UNIMI). In 1994 she acquired the Doctoral degree in “Comparative pathology of domestic and wild animals” (PhD topic - “Pathologies of the urogenital system of domestic animals”).
In 1996 VG started working as research fellow at the Veterinary Faculty of Milan, and since 2006 is associate prof in Anatomic Pathology (necropsy). In the period 2018-2021VG has been the Coordinator of the PhD in Veterinary and Animal Science (UNIMI).
Her main fields of work are research, didactic and internationalization. Research national and international projects, developed during career in collaboration with several PhD students, post-doc, and national and international colleagues, focus mainly on comparative pathology and animals models considering the tumors of the urogenital system (prostate, testis, and ovaries and kidney). These investigations, conducted by immunohistochemistry aimed to the immunohistochemical characterization of these tumors, delineating their immunophenotype, degree of undifferentiation and individuating markers for differential diagnosis. Other fields of research: feline injection-site sarcoma and canine mast cell tumors.
VG was the first Erasmus student of UNIMI in 1988 and, since then, internationalization become an important part of her work, realized at Faculty, Institutional and EU level. In particular, in the last two decades, after Bosnian war, VG was Coordinator (or participant) of various EU financed projects aimed to improve didactic in Veterinary and Veterinary Public Health/One Health especially in Western Balkans (Bosnia Herzegovina and Kosovo). More recently she was also involved by colleagues of UNIMI and EU Medicine Faculties in EU One Health project in favor of Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.
VG has around 100 Scopus indexed publications and is co-author of chapters of the national book of veterinary Pathology, of the volume “Tumor of the Urogenital system” Davis-Thompson DVM Foundation” and is involved in the preparation of the 6e of the book “Tumors in Domestic Animals” (Donald J. Meuten and John Munday)
